This project involved the demolition of two dilapidated farm cottages dating from the 1950s and replacing them with a brand new four-bedroom cottage and detached oak-framed garage.
Although this was a new build, the client and South Downs National Parks Authority were keen to use traditional Sussex materials on the facade, in order to blend in sympathetically with the property’s surroundings in the heart of this protected rural area.
The building was constructed using handmade bricks from Pitsham Brickworks near Midhurst, and field-gathered flints for the flint-faced walls. The Heritage clay roof tiles are handmade by Keymer – a renowned Sussex firm that has been trading since 1588.
Inside, the feel is warm and light, with Dijon tumbled limestone on the ground floors (fitted with underfloor heating) and polished Jura limestone worktops in the kitchen. An Aga cooker gives a farmhouse flavour, and provides the perfect finishing touch for a beautiful new home that we took great pride in building.
One of the perks of being based in Sussex is that we get to work in and around the beautiful countryside of the South Downs National Park.
